After Semester at Sea is done, you have no idea what life is going to be like. You are expected to become an “alien” to this world called reality. Yet, no one understands that “reality” is really what you went through on that ship! Reality is waking up in a different country every now and then, being able to live it; not from any books, magazines or websites, but through your own eyes. That my friend, is reality.
But truth is, no one really cares and won’t ever understand when your eyes brighten up a little when you talk about all the countries you visited and all the wonderful people you met. There is not one person that gets it when you want to cry a little every time you talk about those kids Ghana, or how you want to laugh thinking about the amazing times you had on the ship with your new friends.
And that is when reality hits – welcome to your new stranger country called home.
I was so happy to see all my loved ones in Brazil, and later on, I was even happier to see my friends in Hawaii and start a brand new semester. I had no idea I would see the effects of my trip on daily basis. I started to feel left out on conversations, because I felt like they were “boring.” I wanted to talk about the politics of one “cool” country. What about history? Let’s talk about languages, geography, issues to be solved, please. Then, I started to get mad at everyone that used water too much; or who threw garbage on the street; or who complained about e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g, especially how much they are depressed because they have no clothes to wear to a party, or they couldn’t buy the iPhone 5.
There were times where I wanted to close my eyes and disappear. I am not going to lie that adjusting was hard, and I seriously feel like i have not adjusted yet. Hard is to see myself falling in this world, having to buy a phone, caring if I have internet or not, things that it did not matter a few months ago. I still have days (almost everyday), where I want to open my eyes and see myself on the ship again, with the same people, doing the same activities I used to do. I want to feel that same excitement, the same desire, the same knowledge.
The trip came to an end, but it feels like a brand new beginning.
